Sometimes I think that the only Parisian university known in the world is la Sorbonne.

Often I hear:

Do you study in France? – Yes, in Sorbonne? – No..- No?! (You must be not so intelligent to study there, people think I guess)

Which university you said?...hmm, is it the same as Sorbonne?.. - Well, not actually- hmmm (and I see people’s desperate look)

So, what is actually la Sorbonne?

Founded in XIII century as a college de Sorbonne, today la Sorbonne hosts 4 universities that use the name of la Sorbonne: Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, Université Paris 3 - Sorbonne Nouvelle, Université Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV). Since 2010 3 Poles of research and higher education (Université Paris Descartes, Sorbonne Universités, Sorbonne Paris Cité, Hautes Études-Sorbonne-Arts et Métiers (Hésam)) have used this famous name of Sorbonne.

So, today La Sorbonne is a kind of a prestigious brand, used by different institutions to attract foreign students. So, don’t be confused when you apply for any university under the name of Sorbonne. Check the ranking of the program chosen and read student forums to make sure you make the right choice.
